Visiting La Rioja wineries

For many years now, Riojatrek has been taking visitors around wineries, giving them detailed explanations of the wine making process. If you really want to learn about this world in depth, let yourself be guided by our specialists.

What are the best wineries to visit?

In the Qualified Denomination of Origin (D.O.C.) Rioja there are hundreds of wineries, making it difficult to decide which ones to visit on your trip. No two wineries are the same and it’s impossible to think that if you’ve visited one, you’ve visited them all.

Things to remember

You need to take several things into account when it comes to deciding the wineries you want to visit:

  • The wines: If you are fond of Rioja wines it goes without saying that you’ll have your favourite ones and, more than likely, you’ll want to visit the wineries and meet the people who produce them, as well as buying some wine from the winery itself.
  • The style: There are traditional wineries that still carry out many tasks by hand. Although there are others that prefer to make use of technology and automatic control in all the phases of the elaboration process.
  • The size: Some of the wineries are huge, with endless rooms that hold tens of thousands of barrels, but there also small ones that still use the underground cellars that were dug out many centuries ago by their ancestors.
  • The architecture: Recently, great architects have created true works of art at the service of wine: Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, Ignacio Quemada, Jesús Marino Pascual…
  • The place: There are wineries all over La Rioja. You can visit those that are nearest your accommodation, or take the opportunity to get to know the different villages of the area, while you visit their wineries.
