Trekking in La Rioja

Rioja is not only wine. It is a nature paradise. Seven rivers cross it from South to North, creating seven valleys of unique beauty. It is a special space for those who love nature, photography, trekking and mountain bikes.

The Sierra de la Demanda (Demanda range) has long and wide tracks which lead us to spectacular peaks of about 2,000 metres of altitude, as the Cruz de la Demanda or the Collado San Lorenzo, the highest peak in the Riojan territory. At the bottom of this range, we can find the picturesque village of Ezcaray, with a number of hamlets surrounding it which are worth the visit if you are looking for calm and peacefulness. All around this valley, excellent hotels, agritourism bed & breakfast and restaurants are available.

Path around Tobía crags

Going upriver following the Iregua from Logroño, we reach the González Lacasa reservoir, where you can practice various sports or simply go for a dip in an area perfectly designed for this matter. A couple of miles away from here we can visit the cuevas de Ortigosa. These caves are located inside a calcareous massif that nature has been sculpting for millions of years till magnificent designs of stalactites, stalagmites and columns have appeared. Going upriver even more, we reach Villoslada de Cameros, main entrance to the Natural Park of Sierra Cebollera, an space with rounded massifs, river basins from the glacial times and deep forests of beech trees, oak trees, birches, maples, ash trees…

Another attractive point of this region is constituted by the Leza canyon which, meandering to the deepest part of the valley, leads us to picturesque villages as Laguna, San Román or Soto de Cameros. In this valley we will also view some of the many dinosaur footsteps you can find in La Rioja.

Beech forest in the Cameros shire

The surrounding of the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla (Suso and Yuso) and the Monastery of Valvanera, in the Najerilla valley, are perfect starting points for trekking around streams, deep beech forests and hills with spectacular views.

RIOJATREK takes you trekking around the most interesting and eye-catching paths of La Rioja. Apart from practicing sports, you will learn about the secrets of the flora and fauna of the area, together with the history and traditions of the villages we go through.
